Social Justice Event (2): TEDx talk Teaching Kids to Be Eagles

Image
Dr. Dorinda Carter Andrew was told as a child by her mother that you should be flying above the storm and soar like an eagle and this shows that a child is capable of great things and should focus on themselves no matter what's going on. For a lot of people, it is very hard to not focus on things around you though. Racism was very prevalent back in the day, especially in an academic setting. There were challenges that other white schools didn’t have such as overcrowding and teachers not properly trained when segregation was prevalent in America. The separate and unequal system that students were being taught in created problems but many persevered. The educational inequalities are the storm that the eagle flies above. The educational storm for young people today is not much different from 1948, in 2012 40% of Black youth attend high poverty schools, and 6% of youth attend high poverty schools. When compared this seems like a separate and unequal system of education. For every 1...

Argument : Kahne and Westheimer

Image
The authors Kahne and Westheimer argue that charity work is misinterpreted and change isn't done as often. A lot of these projects can be done with political intentions while others are just trying to be good American citizens. Throughout America having students complete a certain amount of community service is a graduation requirement, this is done to show what activism can accomplish and to make personal connections. Doing so can show students the perspective of others and learn about poverty, homelessness, racism, etc. Many people though don't like the thought of stepping out of their own neighborhood and seeking out places that need help because they believe that the bad parts are dangerous. If you want to see a change in the area through people from outside with eth resources have to help as well. The impact that charity can have on people can be large, the giving of donations towards a goal is huge for those who need it. The privileged orchestrate the giving of don...

Journal #4: Stories from the Field - Seeing differences

The general look of room 205’s classroom is students from Latino, black, Asian and white backgrounds in that order. A lot of the students speak Spanish and the teacher even incorporates it into the lessons. Which is a great idea because it includes the culture that some of the students share. When I was in elementary school I know that boys always outnumbered the girls but in this classroom, but the majority are girls and about a quarter is boys. A lot of the girls in this class express their femininity through princess dresses and wearing high heels while others do so by using pink markers when they do an activity, boys do this as well. A spectrum of both can be seen where girls will refuse to wear anything but jeans and the first marker they pick is green or yellow. That is only physical though being feminine could also be seen as being emotional, in kindergarten, both girls and boys cry an equal amount. Masculinity is physically seen as being aggressive and both boys and girls are i...

Reflection : August

Image
The first time that I was exposed to anything other than heterosexual relationships was watching The God Father with my Grandfather at my house when I was around nine. In no way were the two men who kissed homosexual but for the first time, I saw two men kiss on the TV. Back then that made me uncomfortable it was something I never even thought of as a possibility. I turned to my grandfather and asked him why they did that because I'd only ever seen men and women kiss. Sadly he told me that they were gay and faggots, to which my mom yelled at him and talked to me after privately. My mom said that we accept all people no matter what and to live by the golden rule "treat everyone the way you want to be treated" the way people feel and express themselves is their business. Having both these negative and positive experiences helped me stay open minded throughout life. Living in Foster Glocester it is hard to ever hear people discuss the LGBTQI+ community because there si...

Reflection: Christensen

Image
This is one of my favorite articles that we have been given to read. The author Christensen is doing some really important work by informing people because ignorance is not bliss. Growing up with a sister only thirteen months apart from me and having two brothers five years younger than me I got to see an array of children intended content. My sister and I would fight about who got to be certain characters because they were pretty, and got the guy, but why did that matter to me I was 8? The Princess and the Pauper Barbie movie was by far our favorite movie, it was about two lost sisters who sang, had people try to murder them and each married a man at eighteen. There is no sense of reality there whatsoever. My parents raised my sister and me as independent women who would get our education first and never settle, yet growing up that movie was something we loved. I am nineteen now and in no way have the thought of marriage. These princess movies have shoved in young girls faces looks ...
