Social Justice Event (2): TEDx talk Teaching Kids to Be Eagles

Dr. Dorinda Carter Andrew was told as a child by her mother that you should be flying above the storm and soar like an eagle and this shows that a child is capable of great things and should focus on themselves no matter what's going on. For a lot of people, it is very hard to not focus on things around you though. Racism was very prevalent back in the day, especially in an academic setting. There were challenges that other white schools didn’t have such as overcrowding and teachers not properly trained when segregation was prevalent in America. The separate and unequal system that students were being taught in created problems but many persevered. The educational inequalities are the storm that the eagle flies above. The educational storm for young people today is not much different from 1948, in 2012 40% of Black youth attend high poverty schools, and 6% of youth attend high poverty schools. When compared this seems like a separate and unequal system of education. For every 10% increase in students of color, there is a decrease in funding to educate them. We not only need to educate students academically but teach students perseverance. When looking at eagles it is said that eagles have a focused vision, which could be said that students need goal setting and a plan to achieve that goal. Children knowing who they are and what they want is important to the shaping of a person. An eagle is fearless and will challenge anything regardless of size, students need to take on tasks regardless of the risks. Being afraid of boys of colors is not helpful instead you should be open to learning cross-cultural differences. Eagles fly high and care for their young, young people should know that their success is only as good as what their peers bring along with them. We only benefit if we are together. Everyone has a storm whether it be race, poverty, or sexism. This generation needs help to learn how to ride their storm to their future goals and not to let their challenges determine their density. Being an eagle teacher is an ally to those who reinforce that
