Argument: Kozol and ALM
This author Jonathan Kozol in "Amazing Grace" argues that poor communities in America are being taken advantage of because they can't do anything about it.
Looking at what Kozol observed while in Mott Haven put into perspective how bad the balance of power has gotten in this country. These ghetto neighborhoods are overlooked and seen as a hopeless case so those with the tools to help think why to bother to help. Everyone in the town of St. Ann's has to deal with their own set of problems such as illness. Asthma is the most common illness in St. Ann's for children. AIDS and drug use is also spread throughout the town. With people being sick though they do not have the funds to pay their medical bills. When they go to the hospital to get the treatment they are either refused or wait days in triage with other sick or injured people. Options for health care are also terrible where people have to choose their medical needs between worse or less bad. Safety is lacking sadly as well, windows are barred and people are murdered in St. Ann's also known as "the deadliest block." Drugs and sickness are being spread through prostitution and heroin use. Having a waste incinerator so close to their community, some members are offended by the resources that went into a newer building where 14 other places in NY use to dispose of their waste. The people of St. Ann's have gotten used to this offense because they come to the conclusion to "what can they do?" This author's main point was to through detailed descriptions show the misfortune that people in poor communities have to suffer because there is nothing they can do about it. The money that they need to get SSI or proper medical care, to keep the streets safe, have proper housing and finally to use funds properly. Being in this situation for these people was not a choice, if you start from the bottom it's a hard climb. Poor people do behave rationally and to say so is thinking close-mindedly because they do not understand their everyday struggles.
This author on Reddit with the username GeekAesthete explains why #BlackLivesMatter should not be turned into #AllLivesMatter because although they equally matter by pointing out that out people are choosing to ignore the issue.
After reading what this Reddit user posted in those five short paragraphs it is easy to see that #BLM should be something all on its own because the intention of it is to raise awareness for the problem. When people change this movement's motivation to #ALM they just create friction due to not understanding what #BLM is about. It is not about the equality of all people it is about the inequality that Black Americans are suffering right now, institutionally and individually. By trying to reform the name you are taking away the purpose of it. I believe that other unintentionally are trying to fight this because they think they know what they are talking about when they are dismissing and hurting the people who are fighting for #BLM. This author's main point is that people are not addressing the main problem and getting defensive because they feel uncomfortable with the #BLM movement because they don't comprehend it's true intentions. To get justice for those lost due to ignorance is the main reason for fighting this fight, and people do not realize that when they change the name to #ALM they are disrespecting those lost.

Yes. And so if it isn't the fault of people in Mott Haven, whose fault is it (according to Kozol?)
ReplyDeleteThe rich. Those who could help but choose not to because in their eyes it isn't their problem. Basically reinforcing everything we went over in class today. Thank you for the comment Professor!
DeleteI think it is the upper class because they choose not to help or to see what others of lower classes are going through.
