Reflection: Christensen

This is one of my favorite articles that we have been given to read. The author Christensen is doing some really important work by informing people because ignorance is not bliss. Growing up with a sister only thirteen months apart from me and having two brothers five years younger than me I got to see an array of children intended content. My sister and I would fight about who got to be certain characters because they were pretty, and got the guy, but why did that matter to me I was 8? The Princess and the Pauper Barbie movie was by far our favorite movie, it was about two lost sisters who sang, had people try to murder them and each married a man at eighteen. There is no sense of reality there whatsoever. My parents raised my sister and me as independent women who would get our education first and never settle, yet growing up that movie was something we loved. Elizabeth Eckford being heckled at by a crowd of white people at 15 for being the first person of color to attend Little Rock Central High School.  Integration in schools is something that many educational facilities are lacking, this is the reality of our world. We are still desegregating white and black schools, and it is due to discrimination in communities. Nikole Hannah Jones followed the story of those attending at the Normandy school district in which was unaccredited for nearly fifteen years because it had such inadequate teaching, supplies and general education. This left those who went there seeking other schools to attend and those at Francis Howell to be upset by this new change which had 85% white people attending. Argument: Kozol and ALM

This author Jonathan Kozol in "Amazing Grace" argues that poor communities in America are being taken advantage of because they can't do anything about it. Looking at what Kozol observed while in Mott Haven put into perspective how bad the balance of power has gotten in this country. These ghetto neighborhoods are overlooked and seen as a hopeless case so those with the tools to help think why to bother to help. Everyone in the town of St. Ann's has to deal with their own set of problems such as illness. Asthma is the most common illness in St. Ann's for children. AIDS and drug use is also spread throughout the town. With people being sick though they do not have the funds to pay their medical bills. When they go to the hospital to get the treatment they are either refused or wait days in triage with other sick or injured people. Options for health care are also terrible where people have to choose their medical needs between worse or less bad. S...
