Journal #6 : Last Day :(

Today was my last day at my school. I am so sad to leave them and my best friend/roommate Jess and I made care packages for the kids before we left. We bought them little necklaces, pencils, eraser toppers, and stickers. We walked into the building carrying the bag of goodies and my ukelele. All the kids knew it was our last day and then kept asking where we would go after we were done visiting them. One of the nicest kids I had met there asked me if I would stay with Mrs.Corrado after because he thought that teachers lived together. I read with the same kids I do on Thursdays and taught myself some tricks watching youtube videos on how to help them read when I felt like the answer was obvious. I covered parts of the words and ask them to sound them out and we’d sound out all the words together, this showed me that reading with young kids can be less challenging when you use the tools you’ve learned. I played a matching game with four students in the class that had all missing pieces and found that anytime I’d look away they’d cheat and flip the cards. At first, it was funny because it never was subtle and after a while, even the teacher aid got frustrated with them. Mrs.C called her kids on facetime on her laptop while it was connected to the smartboard so the whole class could talk to them. Seeing the sense of community in the classroom was so heartwarming and I cannot wait to have that experience in my future classroom. Towards two o’clock Mrs.C gave us the classroom to do our goodbye activity. My friend Jess and I had practiced Un Poco Loco from the movie Coco and Baby Shark together to sing with the kids. Before we started we thanked the whole class for being so welcoming and that we were going to miss them all so much. There were some students from a first-grade classroom whose teacher was out so I could not take a video of our whole performance but I did a voice memo on my phone of the first song. We wanted to pick a song that all the kids recognized and that would relate to their class because some speak Spanish fluently and they learn it daily. After we sang the first song Mrs.C told the students to stand up and said she almost cried, she pulled out her phone and asked if she could record us. We then sang Baby Shark and I told the kids to stand up and dance to the song. As we assumed they all knew the dance and song. The teacher aid wasn’t there for our first performance of Un Poco Loco so Mrs.C asked us to sing it again so we did. After that, I grabbed the goodie bags and we handed them out to the kids. What was a $15 purchase for us at the Dollar Store was like winning the lottery for these kids. I will never forget them smiling and sticking the TMNT stickers on their foreheads. I will forever be thankful for this experience and next time I need to be placed in the field I will choose this school and Mrs.C.
